How AI Helps Design Better Plastic Parts for Injection Molding

Everyone can do their job better when they have information, and for many, the use of generative large language model (LLM) AI can give them a place to start smart when tackling new territory. This is true in designing better plastic parts for injection molding: AI can help you start to think about your product and its parts from the perspective of a manufacturer, so when you start talks with a plastic injection mold maker, you can move faster from prototyping to production. Learn when to use generative AI and when it’s time to talk to the experts to get it over the finish line.

How Generative AI Can Help in Injection Molding

If you’ve never worked with a plastic injection molding company before, AI can help you get a jump start on what you’ll need to consider during the design process. For the purposes of this article, we’re going to talk specifically about generative AI and LLMs, such as ChatGPT and Claude.

Building Parts Optimized for Injection Molding

Once you’re past the initial design phase and starting to seriously look at the manufacturing needed to turn your products into reality, talking to an AI can give you the resources needed to start the prototyping process so you can make parts that are optimized for injection molding, reducing costs and the chance of defects and issues later down the line.

Selecting the Right Plastic for Your Parts

Another good question for your AI is which resin (aka polymer or plastic) you should use for your product. Every product has different needs depending on its use and the industry it’s designed for. They can tell you both about the most popular types of plastic to use and about any specific restrictions, such as those in the medical industry.

How Industry 4.0 AI Is Different

This isn’t the only type of AI to help in plastic injection molding. Meet Industry 4.0 AI. It’s important to note that the AI used in the manufacturing process is different from LLMs. These aren’t about word prediction but instead about manufacturing process optimization. These generally fall into one of two categories:

  • Industry 4.0 Controllers: The best modern injection molding machines include controllers—powerful hardware and networking systems that plug into the smart systems in manufacturing equipment to monitor, adjust, and learn. Results affect the whole system, from higher productivity to better QA and predictive maintenance.
  • Learning Robotic Systems: “Pick and Place” robotic systems can be used alongside injection molding machines to bridge gaps, freeing up skilled workers for other parts of the manufacturing process. There are multiple types of systems, and they can be networked with controllers and other AI systems for optimization.

Consulting the Professionals After Using Generative AI

While LLMs can be a great jumping-off point for preparing to use injection molding for your products, they aren’t a replacement for consulting with a mold manufacturer. By working early with mold makers and part manufacturers, they can pick up where the AI left off and move part and mold prototypes toward the final design. They can also act as a backstop for your AI—it always pays to have experts review something a generalist AI produced.

At Midstate Mold, we help our clients go from where they are to the finish line, to finalized molds, and to started production lines. We’re both mold makers and part manufacturers, leveraging the latest Industry 4.0 AI to deliver better, faster parts made right here in the USA. With almost 60 years in the plastic injection industry and focusing on the quality needed for medical and life science-grade parts and tolerances, we’re ready to tackle any project.
